Keep Your Title Tag Small

Recently I made some changes to my blog to improve the SERPS (Search Engine Ranking Positions).

The title tag <title>Page Title</title> on each page used to say the title of the page + my website name e.g. "Keep Your Title Tag Small - SimonBell.biz | Practical Advice for Smart People".

As a general rule of thumb title tags should be no more than 90 characters. The above title is 77 characters but the keyword relevancy is too low.

The important keywords for this page are: "keep title tag small".

Whereas the words "SimonBell.biz | Practical Advice for Smart People" do not appear in the article content, thus lowering the keyword density.

Over the weekend I altered my page titles to just the title of the article. Since doing this I am now getting much higher traffic from the search engines.

It's a simple step that seems to have made a big difference.

I'm also using the description, keywords, robots and author meta tags (since I use Joomla to power my blog I'm just updating these parameters).

So if you're looking to improve your SERPS try shortening your title tags. Give it a shot!

See you tomorrow at 09:00

Simon
