Goal and Process
This morning I had a tennis coaching session with a tennis coach.
Since I've been going to the gym every morning I've met some really interesting people.
One of these people is a tennis coach. He's been trying to get me to come along to tennis evenings and mornings for months, so I finally gave in!
Now, I'm very rusty at tennis. To be honest I've never played properly. But it was good to get some reassurance and advice from a tennis coach.
Interestingly, my tennis coach said something this morning that really helped explain objectives in life.
Goal and Process.
Everyone has a goal. When you're playing tennis your ultimate goal is to win! But, how are you going to win? How are you going to get there?
Process.
You need a process in which to get to your goal.
For example: you're hungry. You're ultimate goal is to feel full so you're no longer hungry. The process in which you get to that goal might be to buy some food or prepare some food. You might be really organised and have already purchased some food ready for when you feel hungry. The process of reaching your goal would be to find the food and eat it.
A very straightforward goal there. But you see the principal.
I need to practice my tennis skills. I've got a lot to learn about the method of playing tennis - and hopefully I might win... eventually!
Anything you want to achieve, any goal you have involves a process in which you must get to that goal.
Last year I studied a Diploma in Business at college. The process in which I achieved that Diploma was by writing essays and attending classes.
Ok, so I didn't write all the essays in one go - I broke them down into smaller chunks - deadlines.
So by doing that little bit every day; attending classes, preparing for assignments, researching assignments, writing essays. After two years it paid off!
It's all about the process in which you take those steps to achieve your goal.
Of course, there are many different processes that can be taken to achieve the same goal. Sometimes it's just finding the right process that works for you.
If you're struggling to achieve a goal, could you change the process in which you are doing it?
If you're dieting to lose weight for example; how about exercising more instead of eating less?
So something very interesting that my tennis coach said that's very powerful.
See you tomorrow at 09:00
Simon
