Careless driving, avoidable?
I'm a fairly organised person. But today I realised I need to be doing a little bit more to save myself time.
This morning my car was frosted over, I had to wait for it to de-frost. I then needed to fill up with petrol. So I'm finally on my way to the gym when I realise the main road I use is closed due to a fatality road accident.
After driving the long way round I made it to the gym only 5 mins late, but it could have been avoided.
I used to leave a towel on my car windscreen over night so I didn't have to waste petrol or de-icer on de-frosting my car. But recently it's been either too mild for frost or too windy for the towel!
So I'm going to start checking the weather forecast the night before to see the temperature overnight and if I'll need the towel.
Also, if it's going to be cold I need to leave slightly earlier to allow for dangerous driving conditions, careful driving, and of course diversions.
On that note; I don't mean to tempt fate here but why when we get any form of weather; snow, ice, fog, rain or even sunshine do accident rates increase?
Yes the roads become more dangerous in extreme driving conditions, so slow down. Th countless times I've been driving down the dual carriageway doing 55mph on an icy, foggy morning when I've been overtaken by a car doing way over 90mph! What's the point?
Next thing I know I'm stuck in a traffic jam late for work. Oh look, it's the idiot that overtook me earlier now lying in a ditch having injured himself and other drivers. It's totally avoidable.
I'm not being completely naive here; I know accidents happen. But I strongly believe that there is no such thing as an accident. Someone, somewhere along the line has been careless. This carelessness has resulted in an accident. No matter how major or minor the accident is. Carelessness can always be avoided.
Take care, drive carefully, and I'll see you tomorrow at 09:00.
Simon
